Muir Beach Wedding: The Ceremony

Alice Cowens officiating the marriage of Paul Koutsoukis and Rose Cowens

This is the text for the part preceding the vows.

Well, here we are on a Wednesday—not the most popular day of the week to get married. But this date in particular, August 26th, makes a lot of sense for Rose and Paul. As most of you probably know, Rose’s birthday was yesterday, and Paul’s birthday is tomorrow.

A birthday is an anniversary of individual existence. On our birthdays, we are called to realize, once more: Wow I’m alive. That’s a happy realization, if sometimes tinged with a bit of soul searching.

But today now marks a different anniversary: An anniversary of souls finding each other.

Today, the two of you, Paul and Rose, are choosing to marry one another, making August 26th a new anniversary for a love that the two of you have chosen for the last 10 years or so. Because of who you both are, and from watching you together, I know that you celebrate each other all year long, in ways both big and small.

But this week in August, from today forward, will be the week you both stop to reflect and realize, all over again, wow, we’re alive, and, wow, we’re in love.
